Do you have a hankering for barbeque? Are you ready to head out to the 23rd Annual Best in the West Rib Cook-Off at the Nugget? Do you need help sorting through all 24 vendors to decide which ribs to try? Here’s your guide. We talked to the men and women working the grills, and asked them to give us a few words to describe the flavor of their ribs. Here’s what they had to say.

“Smokehouse Specialties”Looking for those big juicy turkey legs everyone is carrying around? This is where you’ll find them. They’ve also got spicy sausage that they are cooking up over good old Kingsford briquettes. Try this spot for something that tastes like it was cooked up in your own back yard.

“Rasta Joe’s Barbeque”They took 3rd last year. Their flavor is “jerk” based. They say it’s spicy, with some heat and some sweet. They are focused on a flavorful rub… but have several sauces so you can dress it up to your taste. They’ve got a Jamaican Jerk sandwich. Or you can try their one pound “porkinator” which has bacon, jack cheese, and pulled pork. For smaller appetites they also have chicken, and a natural beef brisket.

12 pieces chicken parts1 cup root beer1 cup ketchupjuice of one lemonjuice of one lime1 inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled and minced2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce1 tablespoon brown sugar1/2 yellow onion, finely diced

“Desperado’s”Their tangy sauce is flavored with garlic and sugar – but avoids MSG for those with allergies. Apple and almond wood provide the smoke for their meat. Here the flavor ranges from Sweet & Smoky” to Hotter than ‘H’. Want something different? Check out their shrimp or beef ribs described as “prime rib on a stick”.

“Carson City BBQ” Is Smokey, savory and sweet with a touch of spice. Their sauce is tomato and vinegar based. They are serving up pork and big beef ribs that fall off the bone in addition to chicken & brisket.
